Route — MetaTrader 4 on a handset

Exness MT4 on a phone: the mobile terminal as the entire setup

Nearly every MT4 walkthrough opens at a Windows installer, which is the one thing a trader holding a single Android handset can do nothing with. This page treats the phone as the whole workshop instead: the MetaTrader 4 mobile app is the terminal, the Personal Area opens in the phone browser, and between them the MT4 route is covered end to end with no second machine anywhere in it.

No computer in the picture

What an MT4 setup looks like when the handset is all there is

The app is the terminal, not a companion to one

The MetaTrader 4 mobile app is often described as a way to keep an eye on a desktop terminal from the road. Nothing forces that reading. It connects to the MT4 trading account directly, so a handset with the app installed is a complete MT4 installation on its own — charts, orders, and account history included.

The Personal Area is a website, and websites open on phones

Opening an MT4 trading account, reading its number and server name, resetting the trading password, changing leverage, funding and withdrawing — all of that happens in the Personal Area, the private dashboard on exness.com. It is a web page, so the phone browser reaches every part of it.

“Desktop means Windows” is a line about somebody else

The official MT4 desktop package exists for Windows only, and that sentence sends phone-only readers hunting for a workaround they never needed. With no desktop in the setup, the operating system of a computer that will not be bought is simply not a variable.

One capability genuinely stays behind

Automated trading robots — expert advisors, the feature MT4 is most associated with — run inside the desktop terminal, not in the mobile app. A phone-only route is therefore a hands-on one: positions are opened and closed by the person holding the screen.

Placing orders by hand carries the same market risk as any other method. Trading is risky and may not be suitable for everyone.

Handset setup

Getting MT4 running on an Android phone, screen by screen

  1. Install MetaTrader 4 mobile from the store

The MT4 mobile app is published on Google Play and on the App Store. Nothing is downloaded from a website for this route and no file is handled by hand — the store listing is the beginning and the end of the installation.

  2. Open the Personal Area in the phone browser

Type exness.com into the address bar, sign in with the email address and password chosen at registration, and open the trading account that the terminal will connect to. An MT4 account is created there too, if none exists yet — accounts are opened for one platform or the other.

  3. Read the account number and the server name off the same screen

Both sit next to the account in the Personal Area, and both were repeated in the message sent when the account was created. Holding them on screen for a moment before switching apps saves a second trip through the browser.

  4. Sign in inside the app

The mobile terminal asks for the same three details as any other MT4 installation: the account number, the trading password set when the account was created, and the exact server name. Once they are accepted, prices start moving on the chart and the account balance appears.

What actually goes wrong on a one-handset setup

  • The wrong app was installed. The Exness Trade app and MetaTrader 4 mobile are separate programs. The Trade app carries MT5-based accounts; an MT4 account signs in only through the MT4 mobile app. Both live in the same store, which is exactly why they get mixed up.
  • Switching between browser and app feels like losing the details. It does not: the account number and server name stay visible in the Personal Area and can be re-read as many times as needed. Only the trading password is never displayed again, and that one is reset rather than looked up.
  • The keyboard is doing the damage. A server name is long, a phone keyboard is small, and predictive text is enthusiastic. Pasting beats typing on a handset, and a name that was typed by thumb is the first thing to re-check when a connection refuses to come up.
  • The phone is nearly full. An installation that stops halfway with no clear message usually means storage rather than anything to do with the broker. On a device that is also the camera and the mailbox, free space runs out sooner than people expect.

The route, part by part

Every piece of the MT4 route, and where a phone reaches it

The useful question for a phone-only trader is not what MT4 can do in general, but which parts of it are within reach of a screen that fits in a hand. The short answer is: all of them except one.

Where a handset reaches it Computer needed
Opening the MT4 trading account Personal Area in the phone browser No
Account number and server name Shown beside the account in the Personal Area No
Trading password Set at account creation; reset in the Personal Area if lost No
Charts, orders, open positions MetaTrader 4 mobile app No
Funding, withdrawal, leverage setting Personal Area in the phone browser No
Identity verification after registration Personal Area — the handset camera is the usual tool No
Expert advisors, the automated robots Not part of the mobile app Yes — they run in the desktop terminal

A consequence worth naming

An MT4 account always ends up as two icons on a phone

The broker's own Trade app folds the account desk and the charts into one place, which is the arrangement most phone-only traders would prefer. It is also unavailable here: that app carries MT5-based accounts, so an MT4 account cannot be consolidated into it. The handset therefore keeps a working pair — the terminal for the market, the browser for everything the market does not include.

In daily use the split is less annoying than it sounds, because the two halves are needed at different moments. The terminal is opened to look at a price or to close a position. The browser is opened when money moves, when leverage is reconsidered, or when a second account is created. What the pair does cost is a habit: the Personal Area is worth leaving as a saved page rather than being searched for each time.

Which half does what

MetaTrader 4 mobile. Prices, charts, order placing, open positions, account history.

Personal Area in the browser. Opening accounts, account number and server name, trading password resets, leverage, funding, withdrawal, identity verification.

Neither of them. Nothing that belongs to this guide — questions about a specific account are answered in the broker's own channels. Where those sit →

Choosing at account creation

Does MT4 or MT5 matter more when the phone is the only screen

The platform is fixed when the trading account is opened, not when an app is installed, and on a handset the practical consequence is narrow: it decides which app the store search should end at. An MT4 account leads to MetaTrader 4 mobile and nowhere else. An MT5 account opens two doors — the MT5 mobile app and the Exness Trade app, which handles account management inside the app instead of sending the reader back to the browser.

That second door is the one difference a phone-only setup really feels, because it removes the browser hop for funding and settings. Everything else that separates the two terminals shows up on a large screen far more than on a small one. What MT5 looks like from a phone →

Trying it before committing

A demo MT4 account with virtual funds is opened in the Personal Area and signs in to the mobile terminal exactly like a real one — same market prices, no money involved. On a handset it doubles as a fair test of whether a chart that size suits the way a person reads it.

Trading is risky and may not be suitable for everyone.

Quick answers

MT4 with a phone and nothing else: common questions

Can Exness MT4 be used with no computer at all?

Yes. The MetaTrader 4 mobile app connects to an MT4 trading account by itself, and everything around the terminal — opening the account, reading its number and server, funding, withdrawal, leverage — happens in the Personal Area, which is a website and opens in the phone browser. The only MT4 capability left outside a handset is automated trading through expert advisors.

Is the MT4 mobile app the same thing as the Exness Trade app?

No, and the confusion is common because both are published in the same stores. The Trade app is the broker's own app and works with MT5-based accounts. MetaTrader 4 mobile is the platform developer's app and is the route for an MT4 account. Neither one substitutes for the other.

The MT4 download page offers a file — is that the one to tap on Android?

That file is the desktop package, and the desktop package is built for Windows. On a phone the installation comes from the app store listing instead, and no file ever has to be handled. The download page is still worth knowing about for the day a computer joins the setup, since the account behind it does not change.

Where does a phone find the MT4 account number and server name?

In the Personal Area, shown next to the trading account, and in the message sent when that account was created. The browser and the terminal app sit side by side on the same handset, so switching between them to copy a number is a two-tap affair rather than an obstacle.

What if the handset has no access to Google Play?

The direct APK published on the official exness.com is the Exness Trade app, and that app carries MT5-based accounts. An MT4 account therefore depends on the store listing for MetaTrader 4 mobile, which is worth knowing before the platform of a new account is chosen. The app and APK guide covers the store-free route in detail.

Does the trading password reset need a computer?

No. The reset lives inside the Personal Area, next to the trading account, and the Personal Area opens in the phone browser. The trading password is never displayed anywhere after it is created, so replacing it is the normal move when it has been forgotten.

Is anything about the account different because it is traded from a phone?

No. The account, its balance, its history, and the prices it sees live on the broker's side. The handset is a window onto it, the same window a desktop terminal would be. Nothing has to be recreated or migrated if a computer is added later.

Does the mobile terminal cost anything?

The app itself installs free of charge from the store. Trading costs sit in the pricing of the account rather than in the software — mainly the spread, the small gap between the buy and the sell price, which is identical whatever device the order is sent from. Account types and pricing →

Can a demo be run on the phone first?

Yes. A demo MT4 account is opened in the Personal Area with virtual funds and the same market prices as a real one, and it signs in to the mobile terminal in exactly the same way. It is the standard way to see how the terminal behaves before any deposit is made. Opening a demo account →

The MT4 account is opened from the same handset

Registration is a web form on the official Exness website — an email address, a short questionnaire, then identity verification in the Personal Area, for which the phone camera is usually all that is required.
